Top 10 Things to Know Before Hiring A
Painting Contractor
Consumers often take a leap of faith when hiring a painting contractor. You are expecting the professional to know what to do and that they will enhance the value of your home. Take a look at these top 10 things to look for before hiring your next painting contractor.
1. Does the Contractor has Insurance? Liability and Worker's Comp Insurance.
2. Does the Contractor have references from who they haves performed work for and pictures of their work?
3. How long has the company been in business in your area?
4. Does the Contractor have a written estimate explaining all the procedures, time lines, and pay structures?
5. How long will the project take from start to finish, and will they be there consecutive days?
6. Who will be responsible for moving all of your furniture?
7. What brand of paint will the Contractor be using on your home?
8. What kind of warranty will the Company provide you with after the job is complete?
9. Always get several estimates to compare.
10. And lastly but most important...Don't choose a Contractor based solely on price.
It is always best to select a painting contractor based on the combination of price, experience, reputation and how well you interact with the contractor. Remember, you get what you pay for. Be an informed, cautious consumer and do your homework.
The first thing before starting your painting project is set up an area or workstation for all of your tools and paint. Lay out a drop cloth in a different room on the floor and get all the tools necessary for the job and place them on the drop cloth. Brushes, buckets, rollers, screw drivers, putty knife, spackle, rags, tape and of course a cold drink.
The next thing is to prepare the room for painting. If possible remove everything from the room and if not possible try to push all of the furniture to the center of the room. Allow a path around the entire perimeter of the room so it is easier to paint the walls. Cover all of the floors with drop cloths to prevent paint drips and spills from getting on the floor, and it would be best to drape some plastic over all the furniture in the room.
But wait, your still not ready to paint yet. Now remove all the cover plates, return air grills, and pictures from the walls. Tape off the baseboards to prevent paint splatters on the trim. Fill any nail holes and spackle any dents in the walls with light weight wall spackle and a putty knife. Take some time to sand down the spots prior to painting.
Tips & Tricks To Paint Like The Professionals!
Have you always wanted to paint like the pros, but just didn't quite know how to get that paint job started. Well here are a few helpful hints to make that weekend painting project go a little easier and cut back on some of the frustration.
So now you're ready to paint. First thing to painting a room is brush work. We call this cutting in the room. You start one wall at a time, using your brush cut in all the corners and along the ceiling line. Be careful not to hit the ceiling. Use a steady hand. Brush around all the receptacles and switches. After you have one wall completely cut in then you can use the roller. Dip the roller into your paint pan or bucket and apply it slowly to the wall in a vertical motion. It is best to roll ceiling to floor. Working left to right roll up and down, dipping in for more paint as needed.
Well now you have one wall done and only three more to go. Repeat the same brush cut in and rolling techniques for the remaining three walls. After you have completed the first coat let the room dry for a couple hours and then guess what? Yep, you guessed it. A second coat.
After your done, sit back and look at your professional looking paint job. Now is time for that cold drink and a compliment from your spouse. Good Luck!
